GAYATRI SANKARAN -- HER GURUS


Smt. S.V. Subbalakshmi
Gayatri Sankaran began learning music under her mother, Smt. Subbulakshmi Gurunathan. Smt. Subbulakshmi was a talented Carnatic Musician who fed music along with food into Smt. Gayatri Sankaran. Her foray into the realm of music was initiated by her mother as her first guru. Even at that small age of five, she was able to sing all Varnams.

For Gayatri, she took the role of both mother and guru which is indeed a real blessing. Unfortunately, when Gayatri was six, she lost her mother. Yet the foundation laid by her mother was strongly held by her.

Allamaraju Someswara Rao
While still a child, she got her training from Allamaraju Someswara Rao. She gave her first stage performance even at the age of nine.

Kalakshetra Gurus
Sri. M.D. Ramanathan
Manjapara Devesa Ramanathan affectionately called MDR was a Carnatic music composer and vocalist. He was a Professor of Music at Kalakshetra and also served as the Principal of the College of Fine Arts there. He was Gayatri's initial guru there for some time.
Sri Puducode Krishnamurthy, a disciple of Palghat Rama Bhagavathar. He used to remark in those days, that Gayatri has great talent and concentration and one day would blossom into a good musician. Her vocal recital at India International centre provided how correct her guru's reading was.

Sri. Vairamangalam Lakshmi Narayanan
Kalaimaamani VAIRAMANGALAM S. Lakshminarayanan, the foremost disciple of the late T. K Rangachary, established for himself a revered position in the music world. He was a versatile singer who expertly handled rare ragas with ease. He was also a teacher par excellence.

Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman
Gayatri was always inspired by the melody and rhythmic style of music of Padma Bhushan Lalgudi Sri G. Jayaraman. The quintessence of Lalgudi style which is characterized by pristine purity, lucidity, superb clarity, melody and above all the deep emphasis on Sahithya attracted her very much. A long cherished ambition got fulfilled, when Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman took her as his devoted disciple. Her musical talent blossomed further, under his able tutelage.

Sri. Padma Bhushan Dr. K.J. Jesudas
From 2008 onwards she has enriched her repertoire under the vidwan Padma Bhushan Dr. K.J. Yesudas. Here she learnt shruti shuddham, voice quality and the bhaavam that transforms Carnatic Music from a mere art to divine endeavour.
